DK- Ad Astra Edition

As you know, next week was supposed to be our annual celebration in the Flint Hills of Kansas, and the 15th annual Garmin DK. Well, things didn’t quite pan out that way, and though we’re still planning on seeing all of your faces on our rescheduled date of September 12th, we’d be remiss if we didn’t gather the troops and bang on the drum during what was intended to be our 2020 DK race weekend.

The official state motto of Kansas is the Latin phrase “Ad Astra Per Aspera” which translates “To the Stars Through Difficulty.” The motto refers not only to the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, but also is a reference to the seven-year struggle to make the Territory of Kansas a state. Wow, how powerful given our current climate. And with that, through the stars and space (and really…technology) we bring you a week of DK – Ad Astra Edition!

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to pull off a fun week of activities for you to join in on from anywhere around the world. Check it out and join us next week!

Group Ride on Zwift, lead by Amity Rockwell

One of our favorite parts of DK weekend is the big shakeout ride with all of our friends before the race. Because in-person group rides are off the table for now, we’re excited to announce our group ride on Zwift, taking place on Weds, 5/27. This social ride is open to all ability levels and led by none other than 2019 Garmin DK overall female winner, Amity Rockwell. Join Amity and a whole slew of other DK favorites for a little virtual shakeout to kick things off.

Thursday, May 28th 9 AM CT- Friday, May 29th

All Things Gravel *Ad Astra* Expo

That’s right, we’re breaking ground with an all-new virtual expo! We know that you love mulling about the expo with friends and family, checking out all the booths and local flare, so we’re going to emulate that with a little something for everyone in a digital format. Meet our 2020 All Things Gravel Expo sponsors and exhibitors and experience everything from product launches and training tips to giveaways and discount codes. Don’t forget to also swing by the Expo Stage and kiDKanza for some exciting content for you and your family!

If you attended virtual camp, use the same log-in.

Visit every booth and mark as “Visited” for a chance to win a Garmin DK entry!

Race Day, Baby! Let’s Ride!

It’s time to take to the dirt for a little #DIYGravel. We’re partnering with multiple-time DK winner Ted King and his DIY Gravel initiative to help you create a DK experience right outside your front door. Here’s the skinny:

  • Design a route equivalent to the distance you would have raced/ridden at DK. #BringYourOwnSnacks.
  • Ride that route*, upload your file to Ted’s DIY page
  • You’ll be entered to win prizes from partners

*Adhere to all your state and local guidelines. Don’t do anything crazy, people.

Use the hashtag #DIYgravel and tell us about it on the ‘gram. We’ll be giving away prizes from DK partners and sharing your stories on our social channels.

Sunday, May 31st

 Klean Kanza!

Each year following DK, our team scours the Flint Hills for trash and waste left behind. Littering is never okay on race-day, but it’s our goal to leave these hills cleaner than the way we found them. In the past, we’ve even recycled old mattresses and couches (not the chaise) out on course. We’re guessing those weren’t left behind from our riders.

So, we’ll be out there in person, doing it again on Sunday, May 31st. But this time, we want you to get involved! Enjoy a little recovery from the day’s previous efforts and commit to a ride in your local community picking up waste that you find on the side of the road. Tag us on Instagram with the hashtag #KleanKanza and a picture of your trash, and you’ll be entered to win a prize package from our friends at GU.

For you local Emporians and Lyon County residents, we will have a recycling and trash container available at the DK HQ at [address]. Anyone that drops off a full bag of trash (or more) can take home a box of GU!

Let’s all work together to make our backyard playgrounds just a little cleaner. It’s the least we can do.
