2020 Garmin Dirty Kanza Postponement & FAQs

The entire Dirty Kanza team has been working around the clock in order to make the best and most prudent decision for all of our athletes, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and the members of the Emporia community. It is with everyone’s health and safety in mind that we are postponing the Garmin Dirty Kanza and Garmin Dirty Kanza XL presented by Salsa Cycles and moving the 2020 event to September 10th – 13th, with race day being Saturday, September 12th. It is our hope that we can all continue doing our part to “flatten the curve” and can bring you all to Emporia in the fall. We will continue to work with local and regional health officials, as we have been doing, to monitor this ongoing situation.

The decision to postpone has not been made lightly, and we understand that you will undoubtedly have questions. Below, you will find answers to anticipated questions in light of this postponement. Please take a moment to read through the following FAQ’s. Should you have any questions after reading this page, do not hesitate to reach out to us at dkinfo@lt.life. As always, we are here for you and want to make this transition as smooth as possible. We ask for your patience and grace as we all navigate these challenging times together.

We are providing all 2020 registered riders with the following 3 options from which to select:

Option 1 – Stay the course – keep your current entry and we will move you to the September 2020 event. You don’t need to do anything but keep training.

Option 2 – Defer your current entry to our 2021 event, at no additional cost. You have until May 15th to select this option.

Option 3 – Receive a refund for your 2020 entry. You have until May 15th to select this option.

The new 2020 date works for me. What do I need to do?

If you are signed up for the 2020 Dirty Kanza or DKXL, you don’t need to do anything with your entry. We will simply move you to the September date.

I can’t or don’t want to attend the new 2020 date. What are my options for deferral to 2021?

Dirty Kanza has been postponed to the weekend of September 10th – 13th, 2020. We understand that you may not be able to attend the new date, or may simply choose not to in order to continue avoiding large crowds. We are offering all participants the opportunity to defer their 2020 Dirty Kanza entry to the 2021 event. Because we are all in a unique situation, we are allowing deferrals to the 2021 event at no additional cost. Participants must make their decision to defer to 2021 before Friday, May 15th, 2020 in order to defer without paying the entry fee again in 2021. To be clear, if you choose to defer to 2021 on or before Friday, May 15th, 2020, you will not be required to pay the entry fee again in 2021. Deferrals made after that date will be subject to our normal deferral policy.

The 2021 Garmin Dirty Kanza race date is Saturday, June 5th.

I already chose to defer prior to the announcement to postpone. What does this mean for me?

Anyone who deferred to 2021 prior to the announcement to postpone will not have to pay the entry fee again in 2021. Any new deferrals to 2021 requested after Friday, May 15th, 2020 will be subject to paying the entry fee again in 2021.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you cannot make the new 2020 date and do not wish to defer your entry to 2021, you may receive a refund. In order to receive a refund, select the refund option no later than 5/15/2020. Please note, if you decide you want to participate in the 2021 event, your spot is not guaranteed with this refund option and you will need to enter the 2021 lottery.

What happens with my hotel/stay arrangements?

It is not lost on us that lodging in and around Emporia for DK weekend can be a challenge. We encourage you to contact your lodging provider immediately to discuss changing your reservation date or canceling, should you not be able to attend on the new 2020 race date.

You can refer to our “Emporia Area Lodging” web page for more information on places to stay.

I was going to stay in the university dorms, what is the situation there?

Rooms reserved in the ESU residence halls for the Garmin Dirty Kanza will be refunded in full (ESU is absorbing all related processing fees). If you reserved a room, you will receive a notification when your refund has been processed back to your card. With the semester in full swing in September, ESU will not be able to provide accommodations for the new date

What can you tell me about crew-for-hire?

If you registered for our crew-for-hire program and plan to ride with us in September 2020, no action is needed. If you plan to make the new 2020 date, but now find that your crew cannot join you for any reason, please reach out to us at dkinfo@lt.life as we can accommodate additional riders in our crew-for-hire program until our cap is reached.

All riders will still be required to have some form of SAG present, whether it be personal friend/family or a crew-for-hire service.

What if I purchased a kit?

Merchandise is non-refundable and will be shipped out to anyone that made a purchase, whether at the time of registration or after.

How will the race logistics change? Ie. start time, locations, etc.

The event will take place in Emporia, KS. However, many details of the event may need to change as we work to provide a world class experience on this new 2020 date. Please bear with us as we navigate this new change in the coming months. We will be working diligently to update all information regarding the event in September 2020.

While this is not the ideal scenario, our team is excited about the new opportunities and experiences a September date will present.

I love Emporia! How can I help support the local Emporia businesses during this time?

Emporia Main Street in partnership with Emporia’s Radio Stations (KVOE, County 101.7, & Mix 104.9) and the Emporia Community Foundation, have created the Lyon County Disaster Relief Fund. This fund will be used to support medical, community, and business needs during the COVID-19 Pandemic. You can donate here.

Am I able to ride on May 30th and September 12th?

There will be no event on May 30th and travel to Emporia at that time will be discouraged. We hope that you will be able to join us on our new date of 9/12/2020!

Am I able to change my distance?

You are able to change down in distance, but not up. For example, you can switch from 200 to 100, but not 100 to 200.

Can I transfer my entry to someone else?

You may not transfer your entry to another person. You are allowed to defer to 2021, or opt for a refund as explained above.

I’m not registered, do you have a waitlist and will you be opening the registration to fill spots?

Great question, we do not have a waitlist however opening up the registration will depend on the amount of athletes who withdraw or defer. Please make sure you are signed up for our newsletter and keep an eye out. Hope to see you in September!
